Filopodia are dynamic protrusions of the plasma membrane that are important mechanisms for altering cell motility and that play a pivotal role in cancer cell migration and invasion. Using rhodamine-conjugated phalloidin to visualize F-actin distributions and actin cytoskeleton reorganization, it was found that galectin-1 overexpression in OC-2 cells, an oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line, significantly increased the frequency and length of filopodia and promoted tumor invasion and metastasis.
