BRCA1/2 mutations confer elevated breast cancer risk, but how those mutations might alter epithelial cell differentiation in preneoplastic breast tissue is unknown. In their study on page 169, Caputo and colleagues discovered distinct autocrine and paracrine ligand-receptor interaction associations in BRCA1 mutant, BRCA2 mutant, and non-BRCA mutant breast tissues. The authors verified several of their findings ex vivo using indirect immunofluorescence analysis. The cover features an immunofluorescent image of non-BRCA mutant breast tissue, where α6-integrin fluoresces green, collagen VI fluoresces red, and DAPI-stained nuclei fluoresce blue.
