GeoMx digital spatial profiler image of a tongue squamous cell carcinoma depicting PanCK+ tumor cells (magenta) and a S100+ peripheral nerve (green). Cancer cells encircle the nerve, a phenotype known as perineural invasion. Using spatial transcriptomic analysis of nerves at varying distances from the tumor, the authors reveal a cancer-induced injury phenotype in nerves proximal to tumor, which has striking correlations with clinical findings.
