Silencing of marginal zone B and B1 cell-specific protein (MZB1), a novel tumor suppressor gene for hepatoma, through CpG island methylation was independently associated with a worse outcome of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, and restoration of MZB1 expression in hepatoma cells reduced cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Distribution of ectopically expressed FLAG-tagged MZB1 in HepG2 cells is shown by immunofluorescence analysis (red).
