What should we do with 50 million pages of tobacco industry documents? This poster will show how the Roswell Park Tobacco Control program has attempted to bring them to life using audio and video clips from the tobacco industry files to illustrate how the tobacco industry actually deceived the public about the hazards of smoking and secondhand smoke over the past 50 years. Most of the materials for this presentation were derived from the Tobacco Institute archives comprised of over 18 million pages of material and over 4000 audio and videotapes. This unique archive has recently been digitized and placed online. Audio- and video-tapes, documents and testimony from the tobacco industry files will be shown to illustrate the common messages created by the industry to create a false controversy about the health risk of smoking, secondhand smoke and nicotine addiction. Future generations need to learn from the mistakes of the past and there is no better way to start than seeing and listening to what the tobacco industry said about smoking and health in their own words.
