Introduction: Women who are found to have a BRCA1/2 mutation have very high lifetime risks of developing breast cancer. They are faced with difficult decisions regarding breast cancer prevention, including preventive surgery, chemoprevention, and breast screening. However, there presently is no structure in place to help a woman make these very difficult decisions. Objective: To develop a decision aid for breast cancer prevention in women with a BRCA1/2 mutation, and to conduct preliminary testing on the aid. The objectives of the decision aid are; 1) to increase knowledge about breast cancer prevention options; 2) to reduce women's decisional conflict (uncertainty) about the course of action to take; 3) to reduce psychosocial distress related to having a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation; and 4) to improve women's satisfaction with decision making. Methodology: The decision aid was developed and pilot tested in three stages; 1) the development of the decision aid and review by expert practitioners; 2) a pilot test with a convenience sample of women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation; and 3) a pretest-posttest evaluation of the decision aid with 17 women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. Results: In addition to the presentation of the completed decision aid, results from the pre-test post test will be presented, including changes in knowledge, decisional conflict, psychosocial distress, and satisfaction.
