NIH Could See Funding Slashed by 40% Free

April 17, 2025
A leaked Trump administration budget proposal calls for a NIH massive overhaul of the NIH, including cutting its funding from the current level of $47 billion to $27 billion, a drop of about 40%. The fiscal year 2026 budget would, under the plan, also reduce the NIH’s 27 institutes and centers to eight, with some being consolidated into preexisting or new divisions, and others, like the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, eliminated entirely. The NCI is one of the few entities that would keep its current structure. Appropriations bills to fund the federal government need the approval of both the House of Representatives and the Senate to take effect.
