Breast Cancer Incidence Up by Half in AAPI Women Free

October 2, 2024

Breast cancer incidence among Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) women younger than 50 has increased by 50% since 2000, according to a new report from the American Cancer Society.  Although overall mortality rates are down 44% since 1989, incidence rose by 1% each year during 2012–2021 for all women—and by 2.6% annually increase for AAPI women. Additionally, the report states that American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women have a 10% lower incidence of breast cancer than white women but 6% higher mortality, perhaps because only 51% of AIAN women age 40 or older had a mammogram in the past 2 years, compared with 68% of white women. Black women have a 38% higher mortality rate than white women despite a 5% lower incidence.
