E-cigarette Use Drops Dramatically among Kids
September 6, 2024
Half a million fewer youths in the United States used e-cigarettes in 2024 than in 2023—the lowest use of the devices in a decade—according to new data from the National Youth Tobacco Survey. Between January and May 2024, 1.63 million, or 5.9%, of U.S. middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes during the previous 30 days, compared with 2.13 million, or 7.7%, in 2023. In contrast, more than 5 million kids reported e-cigarette use in 2019. The data, released yesterday by the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also show that among those currently using e-cigarettes, 26.3% do so daily, and 87.6% use flavored products (MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep 2024;73:774–8).
