$100 Million to Boost Cancer Efforts in Africa Free

July 16, 2024

Yesterday, the Biden Cancer Moonshot program hosted the White House Africa Cancer Forum, bringing together 10 African countries to discuss their priorities in cancer care. As part of the event, numerous public, organizational, and industry initiatives totaling more than $100 million were announced that will expand access to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment across Africa, as well as drive innovation. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aims to increase human papillomavirus vaccination and cervical cancer screening and treatment in Kenya. The NCI, partnering with Roche and researchers in Kenya and Malawi, will conduct a clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the company’s PD-L1 inhibitor atezolizumab (Tecentriq) to treat lymphomas caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. And the Rutgers Global Health Institute and the Botswana Ministry to Heath will focus on workforce development and training.
