To improve detection of sentinel lymph node metastasis, a NIR-IIb molecular probe ErNPs@POL6326 was developed by conjugating erbium-based rare earth nanoparticles (ErNP) with a polypeptide balixafortide targeting CXCR4, a highly and specifically expressed chemokine receptor in metastatic lymph nodes. Through CXCR4-mediated endocytosis, the probe is specifically taken into breast cancer cells metastasized to lymph node, allowing noninvasive visualization of lymph node metastasis to avoid unnecessary sentinel lymph node biopsies.
