Summary
The asparagine synthetase (EC.6.3.1.1) activity of rat liver was elevated during host tumor growth, regeneration, and nutritional deprivation of asparagine and by injections of l-asparaginase (EC.3.5.1.1); but it decreased during maturation. An evaluation of the effects of endogenous asparaginase and aspartic acid or asparagine pools on the assay system revealed that neither appreciably affected the results. A heat-labile inhibitor of asparagine synthesis, however, was found to be present in normal adult liver extracts.
