The periostia of normal and experimentally produced osteopetrotic tibiae were studied by electron microscopy. The pathologic tissue contained viral particles that were predominantly extracellular in location and closely associated with individual osteoblasts. Particles were about 820–950 Å in diameter, and most contained a prominent nucleoid. Some particles seemed to have tails. The cytoplasm of osteoblasts rarely contained virus.
