The effects of the 27 compounds included in an earlier investigation of diverse systems for cancer chemotherapy screening (4) on the peripheral leukocyte count, the mitotic activity of the small intestinal epithelium, and the bone marrow of normal Wistar rats have been examined. The response of these three normal biological systems differs significantly from that of experimental rodent tumors as a group and from that of either of the two rat tumors tested in the earlier study under essentially the same conditions of treatment. Each of the normal systems also differs from the other two in its response to these compounds.
