Under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the Food and Drug Administration is now empowered to regulate tobacco products. One section of this Act describes the authority for FDA to establish tobacco product standards. This presentation will describe standards which may significantly reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and mortality and morbidity. These standards include regulating the attractiveness (e.g., formulations, packaging and flavorants), addictiveness (e.g., reducing levels of nicotine and other constituents that enhance addiction) and toxicity (e.g., establishing standards for levels of toxicants) of tobacco products. Results from the University of Minnesota, Trandisciplinary Tobacco Use Center will be presented that support these potential policies.
