Abstract
Java tea also scientifically known as Orthosiphon stamineus (O.S) is used widely in the Southeast Asian region to treat variety of illness including kidney stones and rheumatism. Recently leaf extract of the plant species has been shown to have strong antioxidant and antiangiogenic activity causing significant inhibition in VEGF expression. Two xenograft tumor models transplanted with human breast cancer cells (MCF7) and colon cancer cells (HTC116) were administered orally 200mg/kg solvent extract of O.S. Both groups failed to show any sign of tumor growth compared to the control where almost all transplanted neoplastic tissues developed into full grown tumor. This suggests that O.S can be useful to prevent the onset of neoplasm.
