Biospecimens are required to support translational research leading to the development of biomarkers and clinical assays. Translational research encompasses projects from biomarker discovery through clinical assay development to ultimate validation of biomarkers and assays for clinical use. Each stage along this translational pathway requires appropriate biospecimens with different levels of annotation. The characteristics of biospecimens needed at each level of biomarker/clinical assay development will be discussed. The Cancer Diagnosis Program and other NCI programs support tissue resources that meet some of the need for biospecimens for translational cancer research. The types of resources available and the challenges of maintaining comprehensive biospecimen resources will be discussed.
