Abstract
Peter Pisters, MD, MHCM, and Michael Teitell, MD, PhD, are highlighted.
Peter Pisters, MD, MHCM, will become president of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, effective December 1. He succeeds Ronald DePinho, MD. Pisters is concluding his tenure as president and CEO of University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, Canada, where he also served as a cancer surgeon and researcher. UHN includes Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Prior to his appointment at UHN, he spent 20 years at MD Anderson, from 1994 to 2014, where he headed the institution's six regional cancer centers and worked as section chief for sarcoma surgery. He specializes in the management of patients with sarcoma and gastrointestinal cancer.
Michael Teitell, MD, PhD, was named director of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in August. He succeeds Kenneth Dorshkind, PhD, who had served as interim director since 2014. Teitell has been a faculty member at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA since 1999, where he is a professor of pathology and holds joint appointments in the departments of pediatrics and bioengineering. Currently, he also serves as chief of the division of pediatric and neonatal pathology. His lab began with studies of fundamental mechanisms of cancer formation and progression, particularly for B-lymphocyte malignancies. This work led to research in stem cell and cancer cell metabolism and the development of new approaches in cell engineering.
