• During his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama announced a “moonshot” to cure cancer, an effort that will be led by Vice President Joe Biden. Although the details remain unclear, Biden has met with oncologists, researchers, and philanthropists over the past several months to seek their input. The goal is to rapidly improve progress against cancer, accomplishing in 5 years what would normally take 10.

• The United Kingdom's 100,000 Genomes Project announced the enrollment of the first patients with cancer. Having already recruited patients with certain rare diseases, project researchers now aim to map the DNA of cancer patients' tumors alongside their healthy tissue to better understand how a tumor's genetic makeup affects disease development and responses to therapy. Researchers launched the project in 2012 and have analyzed more than 6,000 genomes thus far.

• The Simons Foundation and the Carson Family Charitable Trust pledged up to $100 million to match gifts from other contributors to the New York Genome Center over the next 3 years. The funds will help support the center's genomic discoveries and advance other medical research.

• The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) proposed new rules that will require authors to share clinical trial data as a prerequisite for manuscripts to be considered for publication (Ann Intern Med 2015 Jan 20 [Epub ahead of print]). The goal is to improve the benefit to society from the efforts of patients who volunteer to participate in clinical trials.

• The American Cancer Society launched a new website to make it easier to find and share cancer statistics: http://cancerstatisticscenter.cancer.org. It provides information on a range of topics, including estimates of new cancer cases and deaths for 2016; current cancer incidence, mortality, and survival rates and trends; and screening rates by state.
