To defray publication costs and to support other AACR programs, authors of accepted manuscripts will be invoiced based on the journal’s publication and color fees as detailed herein. Authors are required to confirm at the time of submission that they agree to pay the article publication fees in the event that their manuscript is accepted for publication.
The standard fees charged for publication include a flat publication fee based on the journal and article type and an additional handling fee for each color figure. These fees are detailed below.
Publication fee: $2,500 for all article types
Color fee: $450 per figure.
Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research
Publication fee: $1,500 for Research Articles ($1,100 for Brief Reports and all other article types)
Color fee: $675 per figure.
Cancer Immunology Research, Cancer Prevention Research, Molecular Cancer Research, Molecular Cancer Therapeutics
Publication fee: $1,200 for Research Articles and Reviews ($1,000 for all other article types)
Color fee: $625 per figure.
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention
Publication fee: $800 for Research Articles ($1000 for Reviews, $300 for Null Results in Brief and $650 for all other article types)
Color fee: $625 per figure.
Manuscripts originally submitted before January 1, 2016 will be charged based on the previous per-page fee structure.
No fees will be charged for certain invited article types solicited directly by an editor.
Authors who wish to have their published article made immediately freely available online may choose to pay an AuthorChoice fee in lieu of the publication fee. Authors may choose this option upon submission of a new or revised manuscript. The AuthorChoice fee is $3,500 for Cancer Discovery, Cancer Research, and Clinical Cancer Research and $3,000 for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, Cancer Immunology Research, Cancer Prevention Research, Molecular Cancer Research, and Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. Authors who select AuthorChoice are also responsible for the standard color figure fees.
Fee Waivers and Discounts
If either the first or last author is an active AACR member, a reduced rate is applied. This reduced rate includes a 5% reduction in the publication fee and a $50 discount on the charge for each color figure. For example, at most of the AACR journals, a manuscript with two color figures would be charged a publication fee of $1200 and color fees of $1250, or $2450 total for a non-member, but $1140 and $1150, or $2290 total for an AACR member. In order to obtain the discount, the corresponding author should ensure that the full membership information for the relevant member is entered into the manuscript submission system, SmartSubmit.
Senior and Deputy editors of an AACR journal receive a full waiver of the flat publication fee for an article in any AACR journal regardless of their position in the author list. The editor should obtain their “promotion code” from the AACR so they may apply it to their invoice to waive the fee. Color fees will still apply but the author may benefit from the AACR member discount for the color figure charges if a first or last author is an active AACR Member and their membership information is entered into SmartSubmit.
An author who is a Stand Up to Cancer or AACR grantee will receive a full waiver of the flat publication fee provided that the grant number is listed in the acknowledgements. Color fees will still apply but the author may benefit from the AACR member discount for the color figure charges if a first or last author is an active AACR Member and their membership information is entered into SmartSubmit.
Under exceptional circumstances, when no grant or other source of support exists, the authors may apply to the Publisher at the time of submission for a waiver of the flat publication fee. All such applications must be countersigned by an appropriate institutional official stating that no funds are available for the payment of the publication fee.
Beginning in 2016, any article processing charges (publication, color figure, and AuthorChoice fees) are being processed through RightsLink®, an online billing platform tailored for the AACR by the Copyright Clearance Center. If a manuscript is accepted and there are article processing charges associated with the manuscript, RightsLink® provides authors with a simple way to manage and pay charges online via an email prompt shortly after acceptance.
If your manuscript was submitted prior to January 1, 2016 (or if it was submitted after January 1, 2016 but accepted before April 29, 2016), billing and related customer service will be handled through the Sheridan Electronic Order Center, which will also continue to handle reprint billing.
Authors have the opportunity to order reprints of their articles with reduced color costs when they receive their article proofs for approval prior to publication. A link will be provided to the Sheridan Electronic Order Center where reprint fees are detailed and payment can be made. Authors who have questions about fees should contact the AACR Publications Department at [email protected].
Anyone who would like to purchase bulk reprints of an article but who is not a listed author can find information about this at Third Party Permission and Reprints.
